I respect all our armed services past and present but those who end up normal jobs are bloody tedious with their military stories.

Every single subject/situation relates back to an Uncle Albert style anecdote.

I have worked with the serving military for a while when I was a civil servant in the MoD. Sort of knew the mentality as I had been an army cadet and was seriously thinking about joining,

Always got on well with them as there was no bullshit unlike my civilian colleagues. Did have one regular meeting with the Special Forces operational requirements guy as part of the budget I was responsible for was a few million for urgent kit for the SAS and SBS. He missed a meeting and at the next one I asked if he done anything interesting. "Kicking arse in Mozambique" was his reply.
Pretty sure there must be a heavy drinking module in the officer training course at Sandhirst.

In the private sector I had a project manager who was ex-army and had been an RSM in the paras. He didn't talk about it much but did when we were on a contract abroad. It was just the two of us for a week and we got on. He did not much about his army career but on the second to last evening (I had finished my bit we did drink a lot of beer that night) and we started talking about the army. His turning point was when his unit got bombed at Warrenpoint. He made the decision get out after making it out alive and picking up bits of his friends up.
Given what happened to him he was pretty well sorted and a very good project manager.

Worked with a guy who was a soldier during the Northern Ireland troubles in the 1970's.
He was very keen to bring in photographs of blown up IRA bombers who's bombs had detonated "accidentlly"
One of the pics (he told me) was of him holding an severed arm of a dead terrorist and there were others he was proud to show.
I politely declined

Worked overseas some years ago with an Irish bloke who was always telling stories of the Irish Army. Some were hilarious.But one of the stand out ones was that of a group of men he was presenting (parading) for inspection by a man of higher rank.

Apparently the general or whatever stopped at one soldier who had a shabby beret. He said "Soldier, that beret aint quite the ticket. What did you do with your uniform allowance?"

At that time the soldiers were protesting for better salaries and conditions. The soldier replied "Sir , I squandered it on food and clothing for my wife and kids , Sir".

Laughter all around and point well put.

Very very sad.

It's a cliche, but that is what they join for. My son is a serving marine (joined after Afghanistan thankfully) and he and most of his mates are desperate to see some action to the extent that they are currently bored and some are thinking of wrapping as there is not much prospect of doing what they trained hard to do. Retention in the armed forces in general is a major problem when, like now, very little is going on.

They are well aware of the PTSD, conflict and problems that many of those that have gone before have and continue to go through. There are several still serving with him that suffer to some extent but that doesn't stop them wishing something will come along to put their training into practise.... I suppose it's a case of not thinking it will happen to you.

I'm very good mates with a fella that I taught some basic guitar to he was an ex warrant officer class one and he used to tell me some amazing stories some sad and horrific from his time in northern Ireland he also taught at Sandhurst and has honestly been locked up for 6 hours in the Tower of London lol.
I loved the stories and at the age of 76 you would not upset him.

His guitar playing is quite good but has now opted for a ukulele ;-(

FWIW

I like it when my Ex Military friends can talk openly and often about their service and past life.

It's the ones that cannot or will not talk about it, that you one day open a mail or message about that you definitely do not want to get.

A few years back my sister and her husband threw "garden party" and I met an ex marine that had just returned from his 2nd tour of Afghanistan. We all thanked him for his service and he in turned thanked us in a shy, awkward manner. Such a polite, kind soul. He was only in his early 20s, a handsome young man with his life to live. Found out later that week that he committed suicide the following day because he couldn't handle his demons of war.

My son's best friend also served and now suffers from PTSD and on occasions breaks down and is close to ending it all. He cannot come to terms that he survived when so many of his friends did not. My son has witnessed this on a couple of of times and says how awful it is to see his friend go through such a tormented ritual. He's a lovely lad that anyone would be proud to call him son, he's recently married and hopefully his nightmares will fade but I doubt it.

When these young men sign up every one of them could end up in battle, some will return and some won't. Some ex military will say it was the best time of their lives....some will not. Give them the respect they deserve and if they want to talk about their stories it costs you nothing to listen.

My dads mate joined the Royal Navy in the 1970's. He saw the world and experienced different cultures, namely women of different nationalities.
